Pfizer Inc.’s Viagra, as it is its brand name, is no longer available in the United States because of the expiration of its patent for the drug in Europe. Pfizer announced this summer that it would be allowed to launch generic versions of Viagra in the United States in the fourth quarter.
Pfizer will also allow its generic competitor, Merck & Co., to launch its own generic version of Viagra on November 25. After a six-month patent review the U. S. court will hear whether the generic version of Viagra can be marketed as a competitor to Pfizer’s erectile dysfunction drug.
Pfizer is one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies with sales of nearly $5 billion in the U. alone. Pfizer’s Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is one of the most counterfeited medicines in history. As of June 2015, Viagra had the most counterfeited drug in the U. at one of the most common counterfeiter’s counters. In June, Pfizer announced the first generic version of Viagra, called sildenafil citrate, to be launched in the U. and it will be available in the U. in the first week of July. Pfizer was not able to launch generic versions of its generic versions of Viagra until July 1, 2015. The company said it will be able to launch its own generic version of Viagra in the U. in the second quarter of 2016.

Pfizer, which makes Viagra, said in a statement last month that it will not launch generic versions of Viagra until 2019.
